Tenerife Tourism Guide - Tenerife South Resorts

Outside of the main south Tenerife resorts of Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos and the newly rebranded Costa Adeje are some well kept secrets as far as more superb Tenerife resort bases go! Have you discovered El Medano yet! Superb windsurfing and kite surfing here, El Medano also has a stylish bohemian edge with a great weekly market!

If you're looking for quieter bases, yet still within easy reach of big brothers Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas - look towards Las Galletas, Playa Paraiso, Torviscas or San Eugenio on the coast. Further up the coast in the south west is a pretty cluster of more Tenerife resorts - Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena. The Los Gigantes cliffs give this area of Tenerife a special edge, with some superb diving excursions and boat trips available from Los Gigantes harbour. Playa de la Arena has a beautiful black sandy beach too! These three Tenerife resorts are a little quieter than the large southern mammoths, making them ideal for couples, older visitors and families looking for a quieter Tenerife resort base.

Calle Salvaje Tenerife Resort Guide

Callao Salvaje is conveniently situated between Playa de las Americas and Los Gigantes. This new and pristine Tenerife coastal resort is just to the north of Playa Paraiso and still sits within the Adeje municipality. The resorts are creeping up the west side of Tenerife certainly. Callao Salvaje is currently quiet, and being so new few of the major tour operators have branched out here. Not quite completely manmade, Callao Salvaje was once a small Tenerife Coastal Village.

Today it's a mix of residential and tourist accommodation, with some good basic resort amenities including a Spar, an excellent choice of restaurants and it's own little beach - a mix of sand and pebbles. Plans are afoot to improve it! A good quieter Tenerife resort base, ideal for couples or families looking to get out and explore Tenerife. Callao Salvaje is ideally positioned near the main motorway network. Check out also nearby purpose built, manmade and relatively new, Playa Paraiso (Paradise Beach), which is picking up on the Tenerife holiday popularity front. ItÕs an off-shot resort really from Playa de las Americas and the newly rebranded Costa Adeje, positioned between Playa de las Americas and Callao Salvaje.

The Costa Del Silencio Coast Tenerife

Costa del Silencio or the silent coast, is certainly a little quieter than Playa de las Americas anyway, and is situated to the east of Los Cristianos and just south of Tenerife Sur Airport on the coast. Adjacent is Las Galletas (a popular diving site and excursion are). You're only 12 km away from Playa de las Americas here and a mere 15 minutes transfer time from the airport.

Amenities are well developed here in this Tenerife South resort area which was actually one of the first southern locations to develop on Tenerife, beginning in the early 1960s here in Costa del Silencio with the Ten Bel Holiday Complex (which is still there by the way). Manmade and self contained, Costa del Silencio is a good budget resort base for families or couples, with good bus services into Las Americas and Los Cristianos, and north to El Medano and a spot of windsurfing or kitesurfing!

El Medano & Las Galletas Travel Guide Tenerife South

Stunning El Medano just to the north of Tenerife Sur Airport on the coast is a bit of a well kept secret out of surfing and windsurfing circles! As well as being a world class centre for windsurfing (and increasingly kite surfing), El Medano is one of the prettist coastal resorts on the Canaries! There's a laid back bohemian atmosphere here, with a buzzing weekly Saturday morning market, a pristine promenade stretching the length of it's long beach, numerous friendly bars and restaurants, and lots of live music on the go.

There's some choice surfing and windsurfing equipment hire and clothing shops here in El Medano too (checkout Mr Wilson on C/Mediterraneo 2).

El Medano and El Cabezo Bay and beach is a well known windsurfing hotspot amongst the windsurfing scene - it's a World Cup Windsurfing beach this one. This bohemian resort - if you could call it a resort - it feels more like a bustling Spanish village than a resort. It's not an exaggeration to say that El Medano really represents where it's at as far as windsurfing (and some kite surfing is concerned). The spot is particularly favoured by intermediate and advanced windsurfers - and advanced kite surfers who can deal with dodging the many windsurfers and the rocks positioned at the end of the bays.

Las Galletas, another of the Tenerife South resort choice, situated on the Costa del Silencio coast, is a hotspot area for Tenerife Diving. A numberr of choice dive sites are in the area on this mix of black sand and rocky coast! It's quieter than the big two Tenerife resorts to the south west, with more of a watersports scene. The famous submarine diving excursions also departs from Las Galletas Harbour.

Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago & Playa de la Arena

Despite the massive amount of building that's been going on here in Los Gigantes over the last few decades (it's still going on and they continue to built higher into the mountains) it retains a quaint fishing village vibe. The marina area is particularly attractive and the views of the Los Gigantes Giants - the Acantilados de los Gigantes - cliffs which plunge into the sea, taking your breath away.

Los Gigantes is also one of the best locations on Tenerife for diving, marine live is extensive around the coast here, with numerous top diving sites. Diving and scuba diving excursions are easily accessed from Los Gigantes marina. This stretch of the west coast, with the three Tenerife resorts, enjoys the longest hours of sunshine on the island. Another bonus to picking this area for your Tenerife beach resort holiday!

Playa de la Arena is the smaller sister if you like to Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago, but there's building going on inland so it's definitely growing. Friendly and again with pretty cove black sand beach and ample resort facilities including bars and shops lining the coast, it's a fully fitted holiday resort with all you could possibly need. It's quieter here though as compared to the Tenerife resorts further south, so if you're looking for rip roaring Tenerife nightlife head south. Coming up from the south, Playa de la Arena is the first and newest of the three resorts on this stretch of Tenerife's west coast.

The stunning rural Tenerife village of Vilaflor is surrounded by pine forests, and is dotted with historic Canarian architecture and arts and crafts centres. Quiet, rural and prime walking territory, sometimes daytrippers stop briefly here on their way to see Mount Teide. Natural scenes of rural beauty abound in the area including the Tres Pernadas and Pino Gordo. The choice of wine and foods grown and produced locally, are renowned in Vilaflor. A perfect getaway from it all Tenerife rural and walking base. Car Hire is again recommended if you're based here in Vilalflor.
