Shopping in Tenerife - there's something to suit all tastes from vast Spanish department store chains like El Corte Ingles in Santa Cruz to chic bohemian markets in El Medano, to the best off the wall unique clothes shops in La Laguna. Top shopping hotspots on Tenerife, especially for clothing and arts and crafts, including La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz - all in the North of the island. South Tenerife offers a choice of superb weekly markets, all within easy access of the main Tenerife resorts.
Tenerife market choice you won't be short of, especially to the south and west of the island. Markets are perfect opportunities for picking up arts and crafts gifts for friends and family at home! El Medano to the east of Los Cristianos has a weekly market (one of the best on Tenerife) every Saturday morning from 9am to 2pm. It's located right on the beach front in the main Plaza near Hotel Medano. This market has a great arts and crafts focus, with a bohemian edge you'd excpect from this top windsurfing location on Tenerife. Expect a lively affair with often live music, some top chic alternative clothing stalls and more.
Los Cristianos holds it's market every Sunday morning between 9am to 2pm. The market area is situated right near Paseo Maritimo bordering Av.De Londres next to the Hotel Arona.
Moving inland slightly from El Medano another popular arts and crafts and more market on Tenerife is Rastro San Isidro Market which takes place every Friday from 5pm to 9pm just off Av.Santa Cruz. There's another popular evening/night Market at Los Abrigos on the Costa del Silencio coast near El Medano. This one runs every Tuesday from 5pm to 9pm. Also in the south, Costa Adeje has markets on both Saturdays and Thursdays weekly from 9am to 2pm. Costa Adeje market area is located inland from Playa de Fanabe beach, just north of Plaza Playa del Duque. On Fridays the Golf del Sur complex has a market from 9am to 2pm.
Moving to the west check out Playa San Juan's market every Sunday and Wednesday from 9am to 2pm. Also, just north of San Juan at Alcala there's a weekly Monday market from 9am to 2pm situated on Calle de la Plaza. Other popular Tenerife markets include the lively Santa Cruz Flea Market on Avda. Jose Manuel Guimera on Sunday mornings, the Playa de las Americas market which runs every day on Barranco de Troy from 8pm in the evening, and the Torviscas Thursday and Saturday morning markets from 10am to 2pm.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the best shopping locations on the Canaries, with a choice of top designer names, combined with some great off the wall clothes shops and a bustling market. Everything from electronic and photographic equipment, jewellery, ceramics, cloth and clothing is here - plus plenty of chic cafes and bars to collapse into after you've worn yourself out shopping. Top shopping streets in Santa Cruz include Calle Villalba Hervas, Calle El Castillo, Calle Doctor allart, Calle San Jose, the area around Plaza de Espana (Santa Cruz's main hub), Calle Bethencourt Alfonso and Plaza de la Candelaria.
The north of Tenerife does well for chic clothing shops, and the best of Spanish clothes shops. Checkout Puerto de la Cruz shops around central cafŽ and chillin' centre Plaza del Charco, as well as Calle de San Felipe, Calle de la Hoya and Avda. Generalisimo.
Another not to be missed shopping hotspot on Tenerife (especially for innovative and independent clothes shops and arts, crafts and jewellery) head for La Laguna. There's a student edge here (the oldest university on the Canaries is located here). La Laguna's student vibe filters into it's shops, and indeed it's art and cafe scene.
For mammoth out of town shopping centres on Tenerife head for the Alcampo Shopping Centre just off the motorway between Santa Cruz and La Laguna, and The Continente Shopping Centre just off the TF 1 via the Santa Maria del Mar exit. Big department store names such as El Corte Ingles and Cortefiel are in the capital Santa Cruz.
