For family holiday resorts on the Canaries and in Gran Canaria you can't beat Puerto Rico for holiday resort facilities. It gets a rather negative press as the least attractive resort on the island, but this all depends on what you're looking for. If it's two calm and safe swimming beaches, lots of beach bars and amenities directly adjacent to the beach (including toilets), a choice of watersports activiites with everything from fishing to catamaran trips to glass bottom boats, and combined with this it's a popular British (indeed Irish) resort so it has a nice homely feel. If you're looking for a home from home in the Canaries sunshine then Puerto Rico is for you and the family. The islanders that work in Puerto Rico are friendly too, with cheery service in restaurants, bars, telephone booths and cafes. Puerto Rico is tops for families.
Puerto Rico can also lay claim to being one of the best resorts across the Canaries for choice of fishing trips, catamaran sailing trips, boat trips and diving and scuba diving. All these trips cater well for families and visitors with mobility issues or disabilities. For friendly, low cost family holidays in the sun Puerto Rico Gran Canaria is a top holiday resort. Regular boat trips run from Puerto Rico to the many other coastal locations on this stretch, including Puerto de Mogan and Arguineguin.
A top tip worth shouting about early on is that if you've very young children, or have mobility issues check the location of your accommodation if you're staying in this lively Gran Canaria resort. Puerto Rico's many hotels and apartments sit on the hillside of a steep valley. If you're based at the top there's quite a few stairs down to the beach - easy enough coming down, but going back up is hard work. There's plenty of Puerto Rico hotels and self catering accommodation located at ground level, so you'll just need to make sure you're in one of these accommodation bases if you've any mobility issues. Being located at the top of the steep cliffs of Puerto Rico can also be a big attraction, with balcony views out to sea and down on the resort beaches often available.
Puerto Rico's beach (manmade, as by rights this is a rocky coastline) is pleasantly attractive with shipped over Saharan sand, and restaurants and bars galore backing onto the beach, making for pleasant evening scenic dining. Several large commercial centres are dotted about this lively Gran Canaria family resort, including the Europa centre up on the westernside hill. Other attractions include a pretty tropical garden area behind the main beach, a pleasant public swimming pool also adjacent to the beach, a bustling harbour offering numerous sailing, catamaran and boat trips and a small Aqua Park on the outskirts of the resort.
The main manmade beach at Puerto Rico is perfect for safe, sheltered bathing, and it's bay crescent shape is nicely framed by jetties at both sides, on of which is lined with sunbeds. It can get crowded during peak summer season.
Just a short walk along a cliffside pathway (look up during this walk for some sublime kitsch concrete views of hotels built high, high high!) sees you at Playa de Amadores beach. Amadores is an equally attractive family beach, ideal for safe bathing. Hotels also back onto this beach, but one particular edge this beach has over Puerto Rico's beach is the bars and restaurants situated right on the beach - all nicely shaded. For lively family holidays you won't do much better than Puerto Rico and Amadores.
Living upto it's reputation as a superb family resort, Puerto Rico offers a choice of family holiday attractions including mini golf, an aqua park, two good sheltered beaches (if you include nearby Amadores) with calm waters very safe for family swimming and connected by a coastal pathway along the cliffs and a choice of apartments and hotels towering up the valley walls. Both the beaches are manmade with imported golden sand.
Both beaches, Playa de Puerto Rico and Playa de Amodores are equally adequate, and both have numerous facilities close to the beaches, including toilets, bars/cafes and restaurants, shops (including a large Spar near Playa de Puerto Rico) and a choice of Watersports activities, althought Playa de Puerto Rico offers more choice on the watersports side! Both of Puerto Rico's beaches are protected by breakwaters, ensuring a sheltered and not too windy beach base - again this is good news for families.
